The Emcycle was developed out of Michael Scholey’s desire to solve a
transportation problem he faced when commuting in a car seemed less
efficient than a bike
Knowing that bicycles are one of the great, simple transportation
devices but have many drawbacks in these days of SUV's and crowded
streets, he realized that most people, including himself, would be
unwilling to give up the comfort and safety of an SUV or car for the
effort and exposure of a bicycle. Michael therefore developed the
Emcycle as a vehicle that he would like to ride and to which others
would positively respond.
Holding degrees in Engineering from England and Industrial Design
from California, he has always loved designing and driving cars, and
fast cars at that.
In England before the days of high fuel prices and intrusive speed
limits, he designed Minis and MGs and drove a modified Triumph car which
at that time was as fast as a Ferrari.
Returning to California he turned to toys for designing fun, Hot
Wheels, bicycles, wild aeroplanes and other crazy toys were all brought
into being. Building and piloting turbocharged powerboats, sailing
yachts, and racing cars assuaged his love of speed. Asked to design an
electric car in the late 1980s he declined because, although he knew
then that electric vehicles would be the future of transportation, at
that time neither batteries, motors nor the public were ready for this
advance. He moved to designing personal safety items and achieved the
distinction of having 12 patents to his name. The aerospace industry
also benefited from his engineering expertise by designing items that
protected spacecraft from the destructive forces imposed upon them
during launch.
Finally in 2006 he went back to electric vehicles as the world
warmed up and people began to realize that they had to do something
about it.
As the big car companies poured billions of dollars, euros, yen and
yuan into electric cars, Michael knew that although these were essential
advances something new was called for.
The answer is the Emcycle, a new category of vehicle, neither car,
nor motorbike, nor bicycle, but a blend of all three. A bicycle at
heart, with the stability of a tricycle, with electrically powered
assist to cut down on the effort needed, with a stylish body to reduce
exposure to the elements and give a measure of safety and visibility. At
last a practical vehicle that people can feel good in all ways about
driving.
Emcycle LLC is incorporated in California, but utilizes the skills
of people from throughout the world to make a true international group
dedicated to fun, stylish, affordable and ‘green’ transportation.
